I have given the old flooring trick of using roofing felt instead of padding. We have had various discussion here on the merits of this approach but I have chosen to find out for myself. The only argument was noise but so far I have yet to have noise occur from the use of this material as an underlayment.
It runs about $11 per roll and a couple of rolls usually does a home. I do find that in some areas I am not using any underlayment (like you had done) and expect that I may find the same noise issue you experienced. In most of these cases I did this in smaller areas where I had used new subfloor or overlayed with 7/16" OSB.
Again, just my test to see what type of results occur from each approach. Not recommending it for others by any means. I get to fix it and pay for it myself when/if it goes wrong. Others need not be so willing to do so.
