I have done the no pad thing and have had no problems other than a little noise in my LOW end units, in higher end units I will place the padding and just consider it and expense in laying it. If you are doing a lot of flooring you can get closed cell foam padding in 3/32" from quill, it's sold as packing material and doesn't have the plastic overlap but is the exact same thing... Only problem is the min. order is something like 10,000 sg ft. Sales price last time we ordered was .45 per yd and they will custom cut to what ever width you prefer.
