It is often helpful to query the archives on this site as your question has been answered numerous times.

Basically: It depends. Primarily it depends on the laws of your state and how diligently your locality applies those laws. Query the archives with "License in (your state) You should come up with SOME info. Nevertheless, call your DMV.
