ok, I'm not exactly a wiz with the calculator, so I don't know how to work it forwards. But if I take the higher numbers and work it backwards, then neither one comes up to 'today's' value.

And a + b are obviously not right, since they're even lower. So, I agree with your friend that neither one of these answers are correct. The right number would be somewhere between c + d, but I don't have time right now how to figure that out on the calculater in reverse order ;-)
